The Pukaki Trust has also been successful in its application to the Government for funding to build 10 houses on its papakainga (land) near Auckland airport. These houses will provide long term affordable rental housing for low to middle income Pukaki whanau. It will enable whanau to retain their autonomy, while having access to both semi private and communal outdoor living areas and remaining connected to the Marae facilities.
The Housing Minister Phil Heatley announced in July that the Government will fund the papakainga development of 10 houses with a HIF loan of $770,000 and a HIF grant of $770,000 from Housing New Zealand Corporation's Moari Demonstration Project HIF fund.
Further funding for the papakainga development has been agreed to by the ASB Community Trust, Te Puni Kokiri and the New Zealand Housing Foundation to ensure the project is viable and that it delivers the Pukaki housing vision for its whanau.
The Goverment HIF funding approval is an excellent result for the Trust and the Pukaki whanau who for five generations have endeavoured to live on their papakainga.
The Pukaki Trust is the final stages of planning the construction on the first houses with its housing partners, Habitat for Humanity, Fred van der Sande their builder, their architects Design Tribe, HNZC, TPK and the Housing Foundation.
